The 83rd Annual Academy Awards: Best Picture

For this review, let me focus on the best picture category. There are 10 films nominated for this year. They are:

The Black Swan (DONE)
The Fighter
Inception (DONE)
The Kids Are All Right
The King's Speech (Golden Globe Best Picture) (DONE)
127 Hours (DONE)
The Social Network (DONE)
Toy Story 3 (DONE)
True Grit
Winter's Bone

So far, I've only seen Inception. The King's Speech won in the Golden Globe Awards so I think it has a good chance of winning this Academy Awards. However, the other contenders such as The Social Network and The Black Swan are also potential winners after winning best director and best actress respectively in the Golden Globe.

I still have two weeks to check out the other movies and find out which one deserves to win. I might do just that this weekend. Hello Saturday and Sunday! Gotta do some grocery for comfort foods while I do a marathon.

Universal McCann Philippines

And I thought I won't write today. But I just can't help it. Just before I go to bed, I want to share what happened today. I hope these points can help me become better in future interviews which I think would be a long road for me.

1. Punctuality. Punctuality. Punctuality. Why can't I just be on time. I always try hard to fast but in the end I always arrive in my appointments late. This is already my second interview this month and I am late again for 30 minutes. I want to change this habit seriously.

2. Dress code. I know I exerted effort in making sure I make myself presentable but I still looked lousy and impoverished with my tattered belt and crumpled polo. Not to mention my torn slacks. I can't believe I go to Makati wearing this. But it's actually an issue of time rather than finances. I just can't find time to go to SM and buy the things I need.

So stressed.
3. Interview. Sure my English was good but my vocabulary just slips my mind and I keep muttering common words that do not really show what I am made of. I need to spruce up my vocabulary badly.

4. Appearance and Facial cues. More than anything is the face that sends the message to the interviewer. How can I be so presentable with my eye bags almost covering my face? I need an overhaul and I need to do it quick.

Things that are impossible to say when you're drunk

LolSnaps ( does not fail to make me laugh everytime I visit its site. Today, I was intrigued by this photo. Take a look below:

And to test this theory, I will get drunk so bad this Saturday (January 22) just so I know whether this is true or just a piece of crap. But I have to remember to avoid hard liquor so as not to wake up with hangover. Ah, such feeling which I don't want to remember ever again.

Again the words to test this Saturday (with five bottles of San Mig Light) are:

68th Annual Golden Globes Results

So here's the results of the 68th Golden Globe Awards. I'm particularly happy for CHRIS COLFER of GLEE for winning the Best Supporting Actor in a Series. Also, Jane Lynch of GLEE won Best Supporting Actress in a Series. I think it only shows how biased I am to GLEE. Well that's the only drama I've been following lately anyway.

Chris Colfer and his Golden Globe

Jane Lynch, where's your trophy?

Laura Linney - The Big C

Moving on to Film, I have adored Colin Firth ever since I've seen him in Bridget Jones' Diary and I'm not surprised that he has been recognized for his acting ability. He won Best Actor for his performance in THE KING'S SPEECH. That's something I have to watch badly. On the other hand, Natalie Portman won as Best Actress for her role in the BLACK SWAN. I usually see her in a lot of movies and yes she deserves this one.

Natalie Portman for the Black Swan

Ricky Gervais in Retrospect

Ricky Gervais in 68th Golden Globe
I don't really get this man at all... not at all. I mean when I saw him presenting the awards at the 68th Golden Globes, lambasting everyone from Angelina Jolie to Tom Hanks I said, "Hey, who's this man?" I don't even remember his face landing on newspapers or entertainment channels. It's either he's not really popular or I've turned my back on senseless entertainment reports. Not to mention rubbish dramas being produced by big networks- all for the oblivious audiences to consume. So, you can't really take it against me if I'm not very much updated on Hollywood's newest personalities. But then again, this RICKY GERVAIS seemed too pompous and arrogant to me. He should really know it better when to shut his mouth about hurting other people's feelings.

In retrospect, I am assessing whether it is valid for GERVAIS to state some insulting facts. For example, he mentioned about how "Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor played two homosexuals in a movie, while a homosexual is playing hetero in real life.. comes by a name of a famous scientologist." Hmm, then that really intrigued me.

I read the blog of GERVAIS from and this is what he has to say about the entire thing:

Gervais in Ellen Degeneres Undies
"I enjoyed the Globes more this year. I think I had better gags. More along the lines of the Mel Gibson one last year.

Obviously the rumour that the organizers stopped me going out on stage for an hour is rubbish. I did every link I was scheduled to do. The reason why the gaps were uneven is because when I got the rundown I was allowed to choose who I presented to. I obviously chose the spots that I had the best gags for. They couldn't move around the order but I could move around however I wanted.

All the same conspiracy theories as last year too... "So and so was offended"... "hasn't been invited back yet"... exactly the same as last time. "Paul McCartney was furious"... no he wasn't. And nor was Tim Allen and Tom Hanks. I was drinking with them after.

Why do people have to embellish? They're allowed to say they hated it. They're allowed to say they didn't find it funny, that it was tasteless, over the top, or whatever. But why do they speculate and make stuff up?

Don't worry, I know the answer. Because it's more interesting than "it went fine and some people won some awards and then went to a party". But that's all that happened.

Actually, I see what they mean. Boring. So here's what really happened. Bruce Willis and Sly Stallone started a fight with me but Alec Baldwin and Mark Walberg stepped in and helped me out. That's what happened."

So perhaps he was not really serious at all, and those offensive jokes were all in the light of the event's cheerful atmosphere. I just hope the Golden Globe organizers would hire someone with better sense.

CCTV Caught stealing laptop from bag @ Oyster Boy Metro Walk (Camera 4)

Here's a video of a modus operandi of some thieves in Manila. As I've observed, these scoundrels have similar tactics. They would sit close to you and someone will divert your attention so better be alert when in public places. Never leave things out of your sight.

Seven Senses Spa
Antipolo/Marikina Area

PRICE…………….. 8/10

Travel to Seven Senses Spa took about 15-20 minutes from Robinsons Galleria.

Upon arrival, two female receptionists greeted us and asked for our names. (Is it really necessary to ask for the names of the clients?) Then there’s a list of services a customer can choose from. Normal massage (e.g. Swedish, Shiatsu, Holistic, Foot, etc.) costs 500 – 750, then body scrub (with different mixes) costs 980.

MOVIE REVIEW | Rosario (2010)

I think I have carried with me the "film reviewing" habit in my film classes that I felt it appropriate to give my analysis on the films I have seen recently. For this week I decided to go check out this movie entitled ROSARIO directed by Albert Martinez starring Jennylyn Mercado as its lead star.

The story revolved around Rosario, daughter of a rich parents in Isabela, Philippines who own a tobacco plantation during the American colonial period. Rosario grew up in New York and came to the Philippines for a visit. During her stay she met Vicente, the hacienda administrator. The two fell in love and elopes against Rosario's parents prohibition. The couple stayed in Manila where they started their own family. They were blessed with children and life became smooth until Rosario met Alberto. Rosario and Alberto had an affair and upon its discovery, Vicente filed for a divorce. Rosario and Alberto were then exile to HongKong and later on returned to Manila. However Alberto deserted Rosario and their son Hesus in a shabby apartment. There Rosario met Carding, the nephew of the apartment landlord. The landlord took advantage of Rosario's predicament and had sexual intercourse with her. Carding was so furious he tried to kill his uncle and after the fiasco in the apartment, Carding begged Rosario to leave with him. At the end of the story, Rosario chose to leave alone and bid everyone goodbye.

I used to be Pisces: Earth Rotation Changes Zodiac Signs

I'm not really a fan of horoscope and I don't believe in it as well. But just recently astrologers felt some kind of disruption in the movement of the planets. Thus the change in the dates of the zodiac signs. I used to be PISCES but now I am an Aquarius. The only question is whether the change in the zodiac would change my personality as well. Pisces people was said to be highly creative while aquarius, well don't really have much of an idea. But for people who have interest in their signs, below are the changes.

Capricorn: Jan. 20-Feb. 16.
Aquarius: Feb. 16-March 11.
Pisces: March 11-April 18.
Aries: April 18-May 13.
Taurus: May 13-June 21.
Gemini: June 21-July 20.
Cancer: July 20-Aug. 10.
Leo: Aug. 10-Sept. 16.
Virgo: Sept. 16-Oct. 30.
Libra: Oct. 30-Nov. 23.
Scorpio: Nov. 23-29.
Ophiuchus: Nov. 29-Dec. 17.
Sagittarius: Dec. 17-Jan. 20.

It's also interesting to read on the personalities of the different zodiacs. You may want to look at your own sign and assess if there's a grain of truth to it. Basically, I refer to the zodiac personalities when assessing candidates for a job.

MOVIE | The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards

The 68th Golden Globe Awards will be on January 15th and nominees are already out. Only one of the five best picture nominees have I seen so far so I cannot really judge the others.  I've only seen Inception and I must say that I am impressed by this movie more so of the narrative, cinematography, and acting among others.

ML Kwarta Padala and the epic journey

Nowadays people are given a choice between practicality and laziness. Practicality is when you can just go to the nearest bank say BPI where people are courteous, the place is cold and clean, and everything is in order. Laziness is just plain opposite. Laziness nowadays is not being able to find the best and most convenient way to send money.

BPI still remains the best way to send money.
This afternoon I had to walk all the way downtown just to find this ML Kwarta Padala that my father was asking me to do. This by the way is one of those small time money transfer businesses and I suppose found all over the Philippines. My father is in Zamboanga now and he doesn't have an atm account/bank account to transfer money. Then I realized how convenient it is for us to do transactions in banks particularly my choice of bank- BPI.

In BPI first and foremost, you don't have to pay any fee to send money. The transaction is realtimeso the other person can receive the money faster. Plus the banks are safer.

Now tell me why should I choose money transfer shops? Aside from the inconvenience it brings from commuting and queuing, you still have to pay a ridiculous fee. That's not just impractical but wasteful. I just wish people would realize that.

Venus Raj (2010) : The Cat Walk

If for anything, I think Venus' amazing catwalk catapulted her to the top 5, and although some people might argue that she is not that pretty to deserve the crown- well let me remind you that all candidates in the pageant have been sent by their countries to represent them and to insult the candidate is to insult the country so better keep to your self degrading remarks.

Anyhow I am analyzing how Venus was able to make it to the top 15 and realized that more than her beauty, it was her confidence in the catwalk and evening gown that gave her an edge. The gown itself looked so dull and shabby but Venus was able to pill it up. Watch the video:

A lot of people around the world agreed that if only Venus had answered the question with honesty then she would have been the last one standing with the crown that night. I just hope that a time will come when the Philippines would be recognized again in the international community. But as for Venus Raj excellent performance, we Filipinos are so proud of you.

The Catwalk

Perfect curves and moves

As you can see even during the cut for the top 15 where she was wearing swimsuit, the walk was simply elegant and sophisticated. The legs where perfectly criss crossing each other while the hips sway gracefully at each step. The head and shoulders were perfectly angled flashing her smile on top of everything. This I think made her a worthy candidate for the crown.

The Evening Gown

Silver gown for the Philippines

Although truly disappointing, the gown was still able to make Venus stand out. Let me just point out the weakness of the gown. First it made Venus a lot darker than usual and almost made her invisible. The trail was quite awkward as Venus had to carry the back of her gown all the while walking. And the over the shoulders ribbon. Is that really necessary? Anyway Venus really did a great job on this.

Miriam Quiambao (1999) Revisited

This is my last post for tonight. I couldn't get this one thing out of mind after watching the video from youtube this morning. Here is the video

The question was- "If miss universe were to become pregnant during her reign, should she be allowed to continue as Ms. Universe?"

I remember vividly this pageant back then in 1999, although I couldn't make a heads or tails of the question and answer since my facility of English that time wasn't that good. But now that I do understand the question, I would have answered it this way:

"A woman's worth is not solely based on whether she is pregnant or not but rather about how she has stood up and accepted the responsibility that God has given to her. Being a miss universe is a challenging role, but being a mother is simply a testament to women's strength. And both should be seen as equally admirable."

I think this is what I get from watching too much miss universe videos. Earlier I have posted how close Venus Raj (2010) from becoming the 3rd Miss Universe if not for her epic fail in the Q&A portion. So I guess it's waiting time again for the Philippines. I just hope that I still am alive to see that day.

What Are Your Strengths?

What are your strengths?

Is there really a clear-cut answer to this? When I assess myself of all the strengths I have, which ones should I single out? How do I justify the distinction I've given to these strengths? Worse, are these strengths for real or imaginary? The question could have easily become- What is your imaginary strength? But that would be a lot different topic.

I guess what I'm trying to drive out here is the real strength in me. What is it that makes me a strong person able to survive life's challenges? Everything gets convoluted the moment I try to think about my strength/s. I guess I should look deeper inside me and find out what really is my strength. (I just needed to get this out of my mind).

It is now 1am but my mind is still wandering, still wanting to work despite the need to rest the body. But I am human so I guess I just have to give in and call this a day.

Of Etiquettes

This is kind of late now. I've tried really hard to blog last weekend's activity but I was just too busy (well I can't think of a time when I wasn't). The point is there are number of things that I would like to share so here it goes.

Etiquette 1: Never Use DSLR in a coffee shop especially if it has flash

Insensitive lot.
Okay. So how difficult is it really to understand that a coffee shop is not a park where you can just flash your expensive DSLR as  if the mere sight of it would make people adore you. Gosh, how I wish people would grow up and realize that nobody cares about your expensive piece of gadget. You want to shoot? You go out and have the time of your life outside but seriously! Not. In. A. Coffeeshop. In case you might not see because the flash has already blurred whatever brain you have, people are in a coffeeshop to have some peace of mind and relax. People are there because they want to avoid people like you who keeps on shooting your camera.

So I say YES. Let's ban DSLR in coffee shops. That would be my first bill if ever elected.

Etiquette 2: Do not pet in front of a person studying

Get A Room!
Is it really necessary for the two of you to sit directly in front of a person studying. First of all, you are blocking the sight and second how dare you make the person feel miserable by your PDA. Get a room.

So I say YES. Let's ban PDA in coffee shops, This is corollary to my first bill.

JOURNAL | Resignation

Today finally marks my remaining days in my present job. I have submitted my resignation letter and soon I will be embarking on a different path. It's really hard to leave something you have been doing for at least three years, but I feel like I needed to grow professionally and personally.

Things should be geared toward improvement and not just remain as it is. February 25th is the last day of my employment. It's a Friday. At least when my employment ends, I have the weekend to celebrate my freedom.

I will be closing this old chapter and start anew. Hopefully, things will be better for me.

Masculine Wash

For a time, I thought genital wash products are only for women until I saw from the grocery this brand for men. I thought, WHAT?! Why on earth do we men have to wash our genitals? Curious as I am, I read the product content and its says there "for cleaner (or something like that) intimate encounters (which I suppose is SEX).

Freshman Masculine Wash
That really made me wonder. Is it really important for men to wash their penis before and after having sex? In my entire life, I was never accustomed to this practice of washing my penis unless I'm taking a bath which is of course naturally a part of washing the entire body. But I guess, ordinary soap would suffice to make sure it's clean. Products like this are just driving consumer instincts crazy and I am not happy with that.

The Filipino New Year 2011

So here's the video of last night's revelry. My phone's video is really horrible so I better get something better soon.

A new year has finally come and to the Filipinos lighting firecrackers at midnight has been a century old custom.

Filipinos believe that by doing so, evil spirits would leave and the new year will bring in more good luck.

This tradition has been passed down to us by our Chinese ancestors and continuously practiced by both rich and poor.

Although campaigns have been done by the government to prevent firecrackers, only time can tell when a complete stop to this custom can happen.
New year will never be as joyful and colorful without these firecrackers lighting the midnight sky for all to enjoy.

For the meantime, Filipinos will conitnue to welcome everu single new year with hope in their heart.
