Kim Yuna's Post Sochi 2014 Thoughts

It's really tough to find good quality videos on YT these days especially when it comes to the Olympic events because the videos get blocked soon as they are posted. So enjoy the moment while they last.

Here's the SP of Kim Yuna avec les commentaires francais bien sur. Just don't mind the commentators and focus on Yuna. That's the goal.

I couldn't really find a good video of Kim Yuna's LP, so just bear with this one (I know you cringe when you see Adelina on the side, but what can I do?). You might wanna check out though the official LP video from the Olympics site:
Yuna Kim Claims Silver with a Superb Performance | Sochi 2014Winter Olympics

And here's an interesting video of how Adelina would have scored if the Olympics was done somewhere else. Poor Adelina, all eyes will be on her come next skating events.

Here's an interesting POV from an audience shooting live. Frankly all I can see is a stick figure dancing so I guess it's better to watch on TV than live (good thing coz I plan to fly to Korea this 2018 to watch the Winter Olympics Figure Skating!).

And just for fun, I'd like to share this entertaining presentation on how Adelina "won" over Kim. Really interesting how the controversial Russian skater would sustain her reign until the next Olympics. Well that's something to look forward to, especially now that Kim has retired from the scene.

Tell us how you feel about Yuna Kim and Sochi 2014. Or if you have any thoughts, feel free to drop a line.

JOURNAL | Left Behind

Down the Road
What is it about leaving that makes people pause for a while?

Is it the thought that somebody is going to be out of your life and that things will not be the same? Is it the thought that you will have to adjust again to so many different daily routines? Or is it the thought that you are left behind?

In psychology, I remember learning about the separation anxiety disorder. Where people panic when somebody leaves them. I might just be infected with this disorder. Back in grade school, I had those moments when my mom or dad would take me to school and when they stepped out of the school gate, everything was in slow motion- and I felt like I was the most abandoned person in the world. Tears welled up in my eyes, and my chest felt like burning and about to explode. I had the urge to cry.

I Capuleti e I Montecchi... My First Opera

Me with Austrian colleague
I've never seen an Opera before and I have always been curious how it feels like to watch such productions.

So this week, my colleagues and I went over to see an Italian production of Romeo and Juliet (yes, the classic Shakespearean tragedy!) at the Royal Opera House Muscat. And it was simply fabulous.

Romeo (Tenor, Alessandro Scotto Di Luzio)
The production was brought to Oman by the Fondazione Arena di Verona, entitled I Capuleti e I Montecchi. Cleverly set in a rather non-conventional narrative, where characters come out of canvasses and unaware construction workers go hither and thither.

The protagonists of the tragic opera, based on the
libretto of Felice Romani, during that night were- Alessandro Scotto Di Luzio (Romeo), Rosanna Savoia (Juliet), Francesco Pittari (Tybalt), Paolo Battaglia (Capellio) & Dario Russo (Lorenzo).

The highlight for me in this opera was when Romeo was left alone with the body of Juliet. Thinking that Juliet was really dead, Romeo kept on lamenting how his life doesn't mean anything anymore and that he's going to follow Juliet in death. Then Juliet wakes up only to find that Romeo already drank the poison. Such tragic love story.

But it was probably the ending that really awed and striked me, where a frame was slowly taken down and the cast looked like they were really in a painting.

I'm now looking forward to seeing more performances at the Royal Opera House and discover the joy of watching classical theater productions.

Get Ready to Laugh... Courtesy of Javier Fernandez

Normally, I only follow the ladies figure skating events, especially Kim Yuna of South Korea. But in certain cases, such as Javier Fernandez of Spain, I found a special liking to his performance during the closing of the recent Sochi Olympics 2014.

Javier Fernández López (born 15 April 1991 in Madrid) is a Spanish figure skater. He is the 2013 World bronze medalist, 2013 and 2014 European champion, 2011 Grand Prix Final bronze medalist, 2012 Skate Canada champion, a four-time Spanish national champion, and represented Spain at the 2010 Winter Olympics and 2014 Winter Olympics. He is the first skater from Spain to medal at the World Championships, European Championships, or a Grand Prix event (Wikipedia).

A person who is poor is not necessarily unhappy.
In as much as, a person who is rich does not mean he's happy.
You can be lacking with money, but surely would not lack of family.
In as much as, you can pay for everything but could not see value for anything.
For happiness comes beyond what this world has to offer.
And that our state of living does not define our sense of existence.

TRAVEL | Tale of a Country's Twisted Logic

I just had to write this and get it out of my chest.

After reading this article about "the Bureau of Immigration requiring all tourists proof of financial capability to travel" all my horrific encounters with the BI flashed back before my very eyes.

See related articles-

I am always inconvenienced at the Philippines whenever I pass through the BI. I always have to present all sorts of papers just to prove that I have money and can afford to travel. This is simply pathetic and disadvantageous to those who only travel on limited budget.

Gabriel Peri Paul Eluard Gallimard 1966

Finally, we're done with our French poem recital!
And I must say- a job well done, tres bien.

I must also admit that it was both nerve wracking and exciting at the same time. I felt like I was reconnected to my theater side once again, and that I owned the stage that night as if nothing was in front of me (when in fact a crowd of native speakers were all eyes, ready to judge how I'll mess up).

But frankly, I was so nervous in the beginning that I forgot the first line, right after "Il y a des mots.." I was like uh-oh, I need to improvise. So I had to get the microphone and calm myself!

Breathe in, breathe out!

Luckily, after I got used to the stage everything went well and I had a blast performing. It was a high that I hadn't experienced for a long time. I realized that I missed performing.

Pre-Summer Barbeque Party

Summer time in Oman has clearly arrived as temperature starts to soar. You won't last for five minutes outside without getting drenched from sweat.

Just a week ago I was driving out for lunch with a colleague and although the aircon was on high level, it still felt like I was in a sauna.

Worst part of it was that sweat was getting into my eyes I had to wipe it while driving and that's not so easy, frankly. But this ain't hot yet. Just not yet.

Anyhow, this week was the perfect time to hit the waters and off we went to a private resort to unwind and enjoy the comforts of a swimming pool.

In Oman, there are private villas which you can rent for a day to basically have the time of your life.

This week, we stayed in this private villa somewhere in Barka. It was truly refreshing to be away from the city and spend some lazy afternoon with friends. And boy, the food was just superb. We had barbeque and all sorts of Filipino food. It was really awesome.

I think I would never get tired of doing this unwinding over and over again. And I don't mind getting invited.

And this is actually my first ever barbeque party! Oh boy, the smell and taste was excellent and I suddenly felt like I was transported back to the Philippines.

Some useful tips though when renting a private villa:

1) Bring some disco music. Most likely the villa will have its own sound system.

2) Prepare some games to break the ice.

3) Bring your drinks- whatever pleases you. Nobody would bother. Wink!

4) Make sure to bring a camera to capture memories because it's gonna be a blast definitely.

5) Clean up after the party.

Dutch Ball at PDO

Totally had a blast on Feb 28th's Dutch Ball Party as we rocked the night away with groovy music, fabulous people and of course- free flowing booze (which I think I had too much).

It was so fun to be part of the glittering crowd (literally as all guests were donning glittery clothes). And everyone was just enjoying themselves.

Anyhow, we were especially there to spark up the party (so to speak). After the Dutch Ball organizer's speech, the techno beat blasted in the air and the curtains suddenly opened. The speaker were not able to finish his speech though as the crowd turned toward the stage.

And then the show began!

It was rather a 'staged' routine to draw the crowd onto the dance floor. First was the blue robot on stage, followed by the green, and then the red. When the music died, the lights blacked out. And then the three robots were all on stage. It was awesome.

The lights all fade out and the band hit the notes with that familiar "dum dum dum..." beat. The sexy ladies came walking on the stage and the group performance began.

The crowd, now all gathered in front were in awe and I bet were itching to get their feet on the dance floor too.

What made the number really fun was that at the end, the performers grabbed people spontaneously and danced with them.

And that was the start of the fantastic evening.

I have not party-ed like this for a long time and I haven't drunk for quite a while. So after a few bottles of beer, a few minutes jumping and strutting on the dance floor- I decided it best to step out and took snaps of the undeniable crazy fun happening that night.

Me (on the right) after 5 bottles of Heineken

Seriously, I have never been to a party with so much to drink- FOR FREE. And although I am not really good at drinking, it was so refreshing to be in a cool atmosphere where everyone can just dance and not think about anything else.

I felt I was transported to a whole different place (was this still Oman, hahaha- I asked myself) because boy, it felt like one awesome night.

And of course, with a glittery event like this, I wouldn't miss the chance of capturing only the most beautiful people of the night.
