MOVIE | Leonardo DiCaprio's Acceptance Speech at 88th Academy Awards for Best Actor

Thank you all so very much. Thank you to the Academy, thank you to all of you in this room. I have to congratulate the other incredible nominees this year. 'The Revenant’ was the product of the tireless efforts of an unbelievable cast and crew. First off, to my brother in this endeavor, Mr. Tom Hardy. Tom, your talent on screen can only be surpassed by your friendship off screen… thank you for creating a transcendent cinematic experience. Thank you to everybody at Fox and New Regency…my entire team. I have to thank everyone from the very onset of my career… To my parents, none of this would be possible without you. And to my friends, I love you dearly, you know who you are.

MOVIE | Finally Won An Oscar, the Leonardo DiCaprio Style

So minutes after the announcement that Leo has won it, the Internet was peppered with a lot of funny memes. I do feel that Oscars 2016 has been staged solely for Leo (but that's a very personal and biased judgment), but then again a lot of people are really ecstatic for this much deserved win.

MOVIE | Leonardo DiCaprio Finally Wins Oscars 2016... and the List of Other Winners

And just like that, the Internet has exploded wild crazy after Leonardo DiCaprio, snubbed for many years, has been awarded Best Actor at Oscars 2016. We, and the many millions of fans who never doubted Leo's acting abilities are celebrating this momentous event.

JOURNAL | Discourses on Manny Pacquiao's Controversial Statement : A Compendium Culled from Facebook

Manny Pacquiao, a deeply religious man with strong convictions, is entitled to think whatever he wants. And whether you like to hear it or not, he’s entitled to say whatever he thinks. It doesn’t matter that his athletic talent has given him a louder microphone than everyone else... Nike, for its part, is allowed to make value judgments based on those views... when an athlete like Pacquiao decides to thrust polarizing opinions into the public sphere, it presents a new set of circumstances...

JOURNAL | Karen Davila of DZMM interviews Manny Pacquiao

In the continuing saga of Manny Pacquiao digging his grave deeper by the day, Karen Davila from a popular AM radio station DZMM has interviewed Manny and grilled him on several issues including same sex marriage and anti-discrimination bill. A good point raised by Karen was the separation of the State and Church, which Manny brushed off saying that at this time, a government cannot run properly without the guidance of the Lord.

JOURNAL | Manny Pacquaio Continues to Draw Criticisms for Controversial Statement

If you are a person of some stature, you are automatically an opinion maker. Anything that will come out of your mouth  will reflect your personality. Positive or negative, these statements create a lingering feeling to everyone who hears it.

JOURNAL | Manny Pacquiao Slammed by Filipinos and International Audience

Tama si Tito Boy, sino ka Manny P. to judge people. Diyos ka ba? Last time I checked, isa ka'ng boxer na nabugbog ang utak... at worst attendance sa congress. At utang na loob, wag na idamay ang Bible at Diyos sa pagsasalita, dahil walang wala sa lugar.... ‪#‎DisqualifyPacquiao‬ ‪#‎NoCommonSense‬

MOVIE REVIEW | Bridge of Spies (2015)

Just done watching "Bridge of Spies" and boy, I never thought that the US-Russo Cold War was so severe back then, Americans and Russians were so sensitive about issues of espionage. This Steven Spielberg movie was such an eye opener. I also like how it touched on the German Democratic Republic (GDR), the mounting of the Berlin Wall and the Euro-Russo relationship.

And for that, I am asking again my German friends.. please send me a piece of that Berlin Wall.. pretty please! I'd like to have a sense of Europe in my house.

MOVIE REVIEW | Brooklyn (2015)

Brooklyn is a film that deals with somewhat ideal sort of love... choosing the one you love, rather than being practical. But take away the love story, the film captures the intricate struggle of immigrants in the USA e.g. Irish and Italians (which by the way led to the Gangsters of New York and Mafia). This diaspora reflected a lot about Filipinos' current scenario, whereas Irish are to the USA, Pinoys are to the Middle East.

Did I like the film? I'd say yes, but it would have been more compelling as an Oscars nominee if it had a different ending rather than the lead actors having a happy ending. Because in real life, there is no happy ending.

MOVIE REVIEW | Room (2015)

Room is a heartwarming film that is emotionally charged and revolves around the struggle of a victim, held captive and raped... ended on a positive hopeful note.

The child actor was so amazing I wished he was nominated for best supporting actor. It was the child Jack who carried the movie. Although, I'm afraid to say that it won't be enough to beat the other best picture nominees.

If you are into light melodramatic themes- Room is the one for you. ‪#‎Room‬

EVENT | Salsa Performance at King & Queen of Hearts 2016

On Feb 12, 2016, I had  the privilege to showcase salsa, samba and rueda de casino to the audience of Lucena City. It was a spectacular six-minute show, and a successful one I might say. Albeit the complications (losing one member for the night show), the three of us managed to pull off the show; and we did it with a bang.

JOURNAL | Valentines For Singles

Today is Valentine's Day.

Not that I am celebrating, but despite being single; I do have more reasons than one to be grateful today. After all, this day is all about love and that love encompasses everything. Love for a special someone is not limited to boyfriends/girlfriends or husbands/wives (or mistresses for that matter). More than that, you have your family, your friends and most importantly yourself.

MOVIE REVIEW | Oscars Best Picture In The Last 10 Years

All right, I'm supposed to be heading outside now. But my guts just told me to put up this entry. True, Academy Awards does not contribute much to improving the lives of people, let's say of Africa nor does it solve wars in the gulf region.

MOVIE REVIEW | Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

This movie is one action packed stuff... but behind the gory scenes, I can't help but apply a Feminist reading especially at the end when 'redemption' comes at the turn of tables whereby the mothers have now full control of the water. Does it make a strong feminist message? Not so. Because it was still Max who saved the day.

Okay, let's take it at face value. Cinematography & screenplay were outstanding. Although this is the 4th installment in the Mad Max series, it is not difficult to follow the story line- which is the redemption of Furiosa & the wives that leads to the eventual recapture of the Citadel.

MOVIE REVIEW | The Martian (2015)

I love this film.. quite predictable because you want it to be predictable (it HAD to be).. because you become the character.. the ending was so hearrt pumping I was biting my finger to restrain myself from shouting. And the Gloria Estefan song somewhere.. haha, made it really interesting. I'll give it a good fighting chance against "The Revenant"..

Matt Damon as compared to his almost similar role in Interstellar, there is a striking similarity. That although Matt was a villain in Interstellar, and now he's the good botanist in The Martian, the acting was not a force to reckon. In fact, it would be easy to confuse anyone which movie he played in. So I'm not really surprised that he was not nominated for best actor.

What I did find really gratifying in the movie is the light treatment. The narrative does not overcomplicate the human struggle to be left alone in a foreign land. As with the case of "Cast Away", the audience is given a chance to witness how the lone character would manage to survive. And he did survive. It was entertaining at the same time because there were songs culled from pop culture which is so easy to relate to. That strategy is so brilliant it works in movies like "Guardians of the Galaxy" & "X-Men: Days of Future Past".

MOVIE REVIEW | The Big Short (2015)

In the beginning, you'll wonder how come this movie has been nominated for best picture. To be honest, I thought I would fall asleep. The development of the story was really a challenge since it deals with highly technical mortgaging issues. To an average viewer, it was difficult to follow the narrative and how the link among the main characters are connected. The voice over narration did help a little but it was really confusing at the start.

As with other Oscar films trying to be mentally challenging, The Big Short made a huge effort to engage the audience to make them understand the underlying issues from house mortgages and fraudulent practices in the banking industry. Did it work? I'd say 50-50, because since the audience has to deal with understanding the character development, the esoteric concepts must have been lost along the way.

PHOTOGRAPHY | Photos of Old Lucena

Lucena City has a rich history that is probably not passed down to the younger generations. During my younger years, I was never concerned about my birth place. It was always there anyway so I didn't really bother.

In the photo above, we see the St. Ferdinand Cathedral & the building beside it the used to be Maryknoll Academy. Taken in 1966, already over a decade after the Japanese Occupation; the school was run by Dominican sisters. To this day, the school remains under the care of the Dominican sisters.

DANCE | Starting Rueda De Casino in Lucena City

This afternoon, I visited our local town's park to see how it is. At the back of my mind, I want to introduce Rueda De Casino to my townsfolk. Perhaps I can start doing this by conducting a free Rueda class in the park (much like what they do in Cuba or Brazil), where people just dance their hearts out.
